Brian Schatz is an American politician, currently serving as the senior United States senator from Hawaii. He is a member of the Democratic Party. Brian has held this seat since 2012. His was first appointed as a senator in 2012 after the death of Senator Daniel Inouye. Brian was appointed as senator by Governor Neil Abercrombie to serve the remaining term of Daniel Inouye.
In 2014 United States Senate special election in Hawaii, Brian defeated his nearest rival Campbell Cavasso of Republican Party by a margin of more than 148,821 votes. He received a massive 69.78% of the votes, as compared to 27.70% of his rival. In 2016 U.S. Senate Election in Hawaii, Brian won again with a huge lead. He received 70.1% of the votes, as compared to 21.2% of Republican candidate John Carroll. Brian won by a margin of more than 210,000 votes, which goes on to show his immense popularity in the state.
Brian is set to contest again in 2022 United States Senate election in Hawaii, which will be held in November 2022. Most poll prediction surveys indicate that Brian has a strong chance of retaining the seat in 2022 election.
Early life, education and career
Brian Schatz comes from a Jewish-American family, residents of Ann Arbor, Michigan. His parents are Barbara Jane and Irwin Jacob Schatz. The family had moved to Hawaii when Brian was just two years old. Brian did his graduation from Punahou School and later joined Pomona College in Claremont, California.
As part of a program conducted by the School for International Training (SIT), Brian had studied in Kenya as well. After completing his B.A. in philosophy, Brian moved back to Hawaii. He worked as an educator and also took other jobs in nonprofit organizations. For a brief period, he had also worked as a member of Green Party.
Political career
Brian Schatz's political career started taking shape in 1980s when he was involved in community work via the Youth for Environmental Services. He took up various roles such as CEO of Helping Hands Hawaii as well as director of other organizations involved in community work. He gained entry into politics when he won the Hawaii House of Representatives from 24th district in 1998.
Later in 2006, Brian also contested in congressional election from Hawaii's 2nd congressional district. However, he was not successful and was placed at sixth position. In 2008, Brian contested for the chairman's position in Democratic Party of Hawaii and won. Moving up, he won the nomination for lieutenant governor of Hawaii in 2010. In 2012, he was appointed as the senator from Hawaii.
