Mike Crapo

Mike Crapo is an American politician, currently serving as the senior United States senator from Idaho. Mike is also a lawyer by profession. He is a member of the Republican Party. Mike has been winning from Idaho since 1998. In that year, he defeated his nearest rival Bill Mauk of Democratic Party by a margin of more than 150,000 votes. Mike received 69.54% of the votes cast.

Vote share reached a staggering 99.18% in 2004 senate election in Idaho. Mike received a total of 499,796 votes, as compared to just 4,136 votes of write-in candidate Scott F. McClure of Democratic Party. 2004 election was Mike's best performance in his political career, in terms of vote share.

He won again in 2010 senate election in Idaho, where he received 319,953 votes or 71.19% vote share. Nearest rival Tom Sullivan of Democratic Party received 112,057 votes (24.93%). In 2016 senate election in Idaho, Mike defeated his nearest rival Jerry Sturgill of Democratic Party by a margin of more than 250,000 votes. Mike received 66.13%, whereas Jerry got 27.73% of the votes cast.

Mike will be contesting in 2022 senate election in Idaho. He has already won the primary. Most poll predictions show that Mike will be able to score an easy win, just like he has done in the past.

Early life, education and professional career

Mike Crapo was born on May 20, 1951 in Idaho Falls, Idaho. He was born to Melba (née Olsen) and George Lavelle Crapo. His educational qualifications include B.A. in political science from Brigham Young University, which was completed in 1973. Mike later got a J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1977. He married Susan Hasleton in 1974.

In his professional career, Mike had worked as a law clerk. He was working for Judge James M. Carter of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. After working for around one year, Mike returned to his hometown and started working as a lawyer. He had joined Holden Kidwell Hahn & Crapo law firm, which was run by his brother. Soon after, he started taking active interest in politics.

Political career

In his early political career, Mike was actively involved in various campaigns for Republican Party in the state legislature. His brother was also active in politics and had served in Idaho House of Representatives. After his brother's death due to leukemia, Mike contested and won an open seat in Idaho Senate. He served there till 1992. In the same year, Mike was elected to Congress. In the United States House of Representative, he represented Idaho's 2nd congressional district. In 1998, Mike Crapo was elected as the senator from Idaho.

Mike Crapo is actively involved in social projects that aim to improve people's health. Having gone through the pain of cancer himself, Mike understands the importance of early detection and effective treatment techniques.
