How To Know If Someone Is Recording Your Call?

Someone recording your call at the other end is a serious breach of privacy rights. Call recording can be misused against you, which can impact your personal and/or professional life. In today's world, it is quite difficult to trust people. Someone that you may believe is your friend or a trusted colleague can actually turn out to be a backstabber. Some information that you may have shared may be leaked to others, which can impact your personal relations, career, etc.

Due to these reasons, it is important to know if your call is being recorded. Here are some tips to know if someone is recording your call.

Google "call being recorded" message - Google has taken measures to prevent people from recording calls without permission. In Google dialer and even dialers provided by respective handset manufacturers, a voice message is played saying - "this call is being recorded". This happens whenever someone at the other end presses on the record button. If you hear this message, you can know the call is being recorded. The message lasts for around a second, so it is possible you may not notice it. Be alert, especially when the person at the other end is not someone you trust.

Older third-party apps - Google's policy for recording calls was issued in mid-2022. So, call recording apps installed before that can still record your calls without the warning message. This is why Google's new policy may not entirely eliminate the possibility of someone recording your call at the other end.

Unverified apps - Android provides the option to users to install apps that are not listed on Google Play. Using these in combination with older Android versions can still allow people to record your calls without your knowledge. As is evident, there can be ways to bypass Google's new security policies related to recording calls.

Attempt to extract information - If the person at the other end is using old third-party apps or unverified apps, it will become very difficult to tell if your call is being recorded. In such situations, you can focus on the way your conversation is progressing. If you feel that the person at other end is trying to find some specific information, it could be possible that your call is being recorded. If you focus, you can differentiate between a normal call and a call specifically made to extract some information from you.

Limited response - When someone at the other end is recording your call, it is likely that they will try to speak as less as possible. They may ask you to provide the details, but they themselves may remain silent most of the times. If someone is acting in a weird manner and not reciprocating as you would expect them to be, it may be possible that the call is being recorded.

External device - The caller can use an external device to record the phone call. In such cases, the speaker of the phone will be used. If the individual is a few feet away from the phone, their voice will be at a lower level than what you may have experienced in any of your earlier conversations. This could indicate that your call is being recorded.

It is apparent that it is difficult to tell if your call is being recorded. However, with the above tips, you can still make a fair guess. The best approach will be to not reveal important information on the phone. If someone insists, it is likely that they are trying to extract information from you.
